We continue to learn about the Fruits of the Spirit in Chapel. The children are really enjoying this lesson. We have now learned love, joy, peace, patience, and kindness. Our scriptures for each are:
- God is love, 1 John 4:8
- Be joyful always, 1 Thess 5:16-18
- Happy are those who work for peace, Matt 5:9
- God gives us strength to have patience, Phill 4:13
- Be kind to everyone, Eph 4:32
We recently studied the story of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37), when we learned about kindness. This story stuck a cord with me as I was teaching it. If you don’t know it…there is a man traveling by foot on a road when he is attacked by robbers. They beat him up and leave him there wounded and suffering. A traveler walks by and does not stop to help. Again, a second traveler walks by and does not stop either. A third traveler walks by and does stop to help. He is kind to the wounded man. He tends to his wounds, gives him food and water, and even takes him to an inn and gives the innkeeper money to care for the man’s needs. What struck me about the story is the need to stop. In order to help the wounded man, the kind Samaritan had to stop! I don’t know about you, but sometimes I just don’t want to stop. MY agenda is too important. MY day would get all messed up. MY time is too precious. God calls us to show kindness in the midst of our busy day, full agenda and precious time. My personal prayer is that I will stop and show kindness at all times and in all circumstances. As we teach our children about kindness, let’s not forget that the best lesson is by example.
